Robert Bruce, 1st Earl of Ailesbury

Robert Bruce, 1st Earl of Ailesbury, 2nd Earl of Elgin, PC, FRS ( March 1626 *, † October 20, 1685 in Ampthill ) was a Scottish Adlinger and English politicians. From 1660 to 1663 he had a seat in the English House of Commons before he inherited the title Earl of Elgin by his father.

Life

Bruce was the son of Thomas Bruce, 1st Earl of Elgin. During its lifetime, Robert Bruce was a deputy in the 1660 Convention Parliament for Bedfordshire and 1661 in the Cavalier Parliament. He gave up the seat in the lower house of the British Parliament, when he inherited his title after the death of his father in 1663. With the Scottish title Earl of Elgin, a Scottish seat in the House of Lords was connected.

On 18 March the following year he was for his mediation services during the English Restoration with the English title Earl of Ailesbury rewarded ( in the County of Buckingham ), together with the subordinate title Viscount Bruce ( of Ampthill in the County of Bedford ) and Baron Bruce ( of Skelton in the County of York). With this item, a seat in the English House of Lords was connected.

From 1660, he was, first together with the Earl of Cleveland, from 1667 to his death finally alone Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire.

In October 1678 he was Privy Counsellor (PC) and a gentleman of the bedchamber. From 1681 until his death he was also Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire and Hampshire. In 1685 he became a member of the Royal Society, and on July 30 Lord Chamberlain of the Household.

Lord Ailesbury died in 1685 at the age of 58 years in Houghton House north of Ampthill in Bedfordshire, and was buried on 26 October of the same year in Maulden. 1686 built his widow near Ampthill House, originally as a Dower House.
