Robert Clatworthy

William Robert Clatworthy ( born December 31, 1911 in Illinois; † March 2, 1992 in La Cañada Flintridge, California ) was an American art director.

Life

Clatworthy began his film career after completing his training at the age of 21 years. In 1943 he moved to the Universal Studios as chief architect and worked in his early films including for the directors Charles Lamont and Robert Siodmak. In the 1950s, he contributed to several Western before 1956 for Douglas Sirk's Written on the Wind created the buildings. The following year, he worked for Orson Welles in Touch of Evil. His career received a boost by working with Alfred Hitchcock. For the thriller Psycho Clatworthy received in 1961 his first Oscar nomination. In the 1960s, he turned several times with Doris Day, A Lover Come, Send Me No Flowers, and That Touch of Mink, for which he received his second Oscar nomination. The Oscar he finally took in 1966 for his work on Stanley Kramer's Ship of Fools contrary, he received nominations for damned sweet world and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. Clatworthy rarely worked for television, with the exceptions listed under other nine episodes of the Western series one thousand miles of dust in 1959 and seven episodes of Disney land between 1963 and 1964. During the 1970s he worked rare and retired after his last film Another man, another woman in 1977 from the film business.
