Robert, Count of Mortain

Robert of Mortain (* 1031, † December 8, 1090 ) from the House Contender Ville was a Norman nobleman and Earl of Cornwall.

Son of the Earl of Herluin Conte Ville (1001-1066) and his wife Herleva ( Arlette ) ( 1003-1050 ). He was the half-brother of William the Conqueror (1027-1087) and full brother of Odo, Bishop of Bayeux (1035-1097) through his mother.

In 1058 he married Mathilde ( 1039-1085 ), daughter of Roger II de Montgomery ( 1005-1094 ) and his wife Mabile de Bellême ( 1026-1079 ).

Robert of Mortain took part in the Battle of Hastings ( 1066) part and received by his half-brother William, now King of England, several lands as a fief. Thus he became one of the largest and most powerful landowner in England and Normandy. In Mortain he had the predecessor of today's collegiate church of St. Évroult build, from which even a portal has received from his time.

His chaplain was later canonized Vitalis, founder of the Abbey of Savigny.
