Robert Elsie

Robert Elsie ( born June 29, 1950 in Vancouver, Canada ) is a Albanologist.

His four-year undergraduate studies at the University of British Columbia (Department of Classical Philology and Linguistics ), he graduated from in 1972. In the following years he studied at the Indo-European Seminar of the Free University of Berlin, at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes and the University of Paris IV, at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies in Ireland and at the Linguistics Institute of the University of Bonn, where he received his doctorate in 1978.

From 1978, he has repeatedly visited Albania in the framework of the Scientific meetings between the University of Bonn and the Albanian Academy of Sciences. He also took several times at the International Seminar part of Albanian language, literature and culture in Pristina.

Between the years 1982 and 1987 he was employed as a translator and interpreter at the Foreign Office in Bonn and from 2002 to 2013 at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague. In addition, he worked as a freelance conference interpreter, Albanian and English. Robert Elsie is the author of several books and articles, primarily in the field of Albanian studies.

In 2013 he was awarded the Albanian president Bujar Nishani with the Dankbarkeitsmedallie.
