Robert Fein

Robert Fine ( born December 8, 1907 in Vienna, † January 2, 1975 ) was an Austrian weightlifter and Olympic champion.

Career

Robert Fine began in Vienna, first as a gymnast and swimmer and came in 1928 to weightlifting when he became a member of the Vienna athletes clubs Ursus. He already won in Vienna in 1929 the title of European champion at lightweight. Thus began a career that culminated in Olympic gold medal in 1936 in Berlin. There he won jointly with the Egyptian Anwar Mesbah gold medal in the lightweight and both could beat the then world record with a weight of 342.50 kg. 1937 Gold Medal for Services to the Republic of Austria awarded him.

Robert Fine suffered reprisals as a Jew in the Nazi period and could not start. After the 2nd World War, he took several high offices in the Austrian and international Weightlifting Federation.
