Robert Gerwig

Robert Gerwig ( born 2 May 1820 in Karlsruhe, † December 6, 1885 ) was a German civil engineer and politician in Baden.

Life

Robert Gerwig, after attending the Grand Ducal Polytechnic School of Karlsruhe - he passed the state examination in civil engineering with honors - first in road construction. He was planning new roads in difficult terrain, for example Guetenbach to Furtwangen in the Black Forest or Vohrenbach after Unterkirnach. In 1850 he founded in Furtwangen first German School of Watchmaking, to stimulate the production of watches in this " poor house" bathing. In 1852 he began to gather at the school a collection of clocks, from which then developed the German Watch Museum. He led the school until 1857.

Subsequently, he was mainly occupied with the construction of railways: The Badische main railway section ( Waldshut- Schaffhausen- Singen ( Hohentwiel ) Constance), the route Waldshut -Koblenz AG, the Black Forest Railway ( Offenburg- Hausach singing ), the Höllentalbahn ( Freiburg - New Town) and the north ramp of the Gotthard Railway were built according to his plans. His " specialty " was going to avoid large gradients by generous loops and helical tunnel.

Politically Gerwig worked as a deputy of the National Liberal in the Badische national assembly and later in the Reichstag, where he was also much involved in the construction of the Reichstag building in Berlin. Gerwig was first elected on November 5, 1875 in a by-election to the Reichstag and was able to stay by his re- election in 1877, 1878 and 1881 to the year 1884 in the office. He represented the constituency as an MP Baden 2 ( Donaueschingen - Villingen ).

Robert Gerwig died on December 6, 1885 in Karlsruhe by a stroke. His grave is located there on the Campo Santo of the main cemetery.

Honors

The Gerwig -Platz in front of the Freiburg Wiehre Station was named after him, as is the Robert - Gerwig -Platz in Furtwangen, at which the clock museum founded by him is. In his hometown of Karlsruhe, Furtwangen, Villingen -Schwenningen, Waldshut -Tiengen, Kirchzarten, Konstanz and Radolfzell streets were named after him. In Karlsruhe and Triberg in the Black Forest will also find monuments. In Furtwangen vocational schools that emerged from his watchmaking school have been named as Robert - Gerwig - school. Similarly, the Mercantile schools were named Sing in Singen (Hohentwiel ) as Robert - Gerwig - school. In Hausach the high school was named after Gerwig.

The musical of the Black Forest Railway listed - In the years 2009 and 2010 was in Triberg Gerwig. The authors of music and lyrics are the journalist Peter Bruker and his friend, the musician and teacher Rolf Langenbach.

Gerwig was also appointed associate member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Civil Engineering in Berlin.
