Robert Liston

Sir Robert Liston ( born October 28, 1794 in Ecclesmachan, Linlithgow (Scotland ), † December 7, 1847 in London) was a British surgeon.

Life

His father was a pastor in Ecclesmachan. Robert Liston began in 1810 the study of anatomy at John Barclay ( 1758-1826 ) in Edinburgh.

In 1818 he was a lecturer in anatomy and surgery at the Edinburgh School of Medicine, 1827 Surgeon at the Royal Hospital ( Royal Infirmary ) and 1835 ( until his death in 1847), Professor of Clinical Surgery at University College London.

Liston introduced various improvements in amputations and wound dressings. The Listonsche amputation knife is named after him.
