Robert Lucas (writer)

Robert Lucas (actually: Robert honorary branch; born May 8, 1904 in Vienna, † 19 January 1984 in London) was an Austrian writer and comedian.

Life

Robert honorary branch, son of Sigmund and Emma, born Robin son, graduated from the Institute of Technology and the University of Vienna chemistry and physics, and in 1927 Dr. phil. doctorate. He first worked as a chemist and was a member of the socialist education center. 1928-1933, together with Victor Green Tree, Jura Soyfer, Karl Bittman and Ludwig Wagner conductor and author of the political social democracy related political cabarets. In 1929 he became a member of the SDAP. Since the early 1930s he was editor of the forward -Verlag 1932-33 and editor of the political stage.

In 1934 he had a socialist and a Jew to leave Austria and emigrated to London. There he first correspondent of the Neue Freie Presse. After its acquisition by the Nazis in 1938 he became a member of the German Service of the BBC, where he worked until 1967, but in addition also wrote for other broadcasters features and radio plays. 1959-1974 he worked for the time.

Lucas is best known for the so-called " Hirnschal letters ". Corporal Hirnschal was a fictional character that Lucas had developed along the lines of Jaroslav Hašek's Švejk already for the political cabaret. From 1940 until the end of the war wrote Lucas as a radio satires hundred letters this now into military service collected Hirnschal to his wife Amalie, which were produced and broadcast by the BBC and according to British estimates, in the last year, had about 10 million regular listeners. The speaker was the emigrated Viennese actor Fritz Schrecker.
