Robert M. Charlton

Robert Milledge Charlton ( born January 19, 1807 in Savannah, Georgia, † January 18, 1854 ibid ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party, who represented the state of Georgia in the U.S. Senate.

After completing his legal education, Robert Charlton was admitted to the bar and began to practice in his hometown of Savannah. He had held in 1828 as a deputy in the House of Representatives of Georgia His first political office. In 1832 he was selected for the Eastern District Court of Georgia Judge of the Superior Court ( Superior Court ); Furthermore, he acted for some time as a federal prosecutor in this area.

From 1839 to 1841 Charlton exercised the office of mayor of Savannah. He followed in the footsteps of his father, Thomas Charlton, who had held this position in the years 1815 and 1819. Finally, he was appointed to succeed the retiring U.S. Senator John MacPherson Berrien, whose mandate he took over on May 31, 1852. Charlton remained until the end of the legislature on March 3, 1853 at the Congress. He returned to Savannah, where he died the following year, shortly before his 47th birthday.

The Charlton County, Georgia is named after Robert Charlton.
