Robert M. Haas

Robert M. Haas ( born January 3, 1889 in Newark, New Jersey, † December 17, 1962 in Costa Mesa, California ) was an American art director with a remarkable career at Warner Bros. in the 1930s and 1940s.

Life

Robert M. Haas had studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and worked since 1912 as a freelance architect before he went in 1920 as artistic director for the film company Famous Players - Lasky Corporation. With its decor to the first significant horror film adaptation of the literary classic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Haas received an interesting job in his first year of work. Later (1923 /24) was particularly his collaboration with director Henry King fruitful.

Since 1929, active for Warner Bros., Robert Haas was only from the mid-30s grab rewarding jobs, at first primarily as a designer for the films Mervyn Le Roy, later often for various Bette Davis star vehicle as Jezebel - a The wicked lady, victim great love and travel from the past. With its sober decorations to the cult thriller The Maltese Falcon Haas wore 1941 to lift the film noir from the baptism. 1948 and 1949 respectively, he received an Oscar nomination for his work on the family comedy Life with Father and the melodrama Silent lips.
