Robert M. Knapp

Robert McCarty Knapp ( * April 21, 1831 in New York City; † June 24, 1879 in Jerseyville, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1873 and 1879 he represented two times the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Robert Knapp was the younger brother of Congressman Anthony L. Knapp ( 1828-1881 ). In 1839 he came with his parents to Jerseyville, Illinois, where he attended the public schools. He then attended the Kentucky Military Institute in Frankfort. After studying law and his 1855 was admitted to the bar he began in Jerseyville to work in this profession. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career. In 1867 he became a deputy in the House of Representatives from Illinois; 1871 to 1876, he served as mayor of Jerseyville.

In the congressional elections of 1872 Knapp was in the eleventh electoral district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Samuel S. Marshall on March 4, 1873. As he vainly sought re-election in 1874, he was initially able to do only one term in Congress until March 3, 1875. Two years later he was able to regain his seat in Congress and spend between 4 March 1877, and the March 3, 1879 a further term in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1878 he was not re-elected.

After the end of his time in Congress Robert Knapp practiced as a lawyer again. He died, according to his grave stone on June 24, 1879 in Jerseyville.
