Robert Mayer (ice hockey)

Robert Mayer ( born October 9, 1989 in Havířov, Czechoslovakia ) is a Swiss- Czech professional ice hockey goaltender. He is currently at the Hamilton Bulldogs in the American Hockey League contract.

Career

Robert Mayer began his career with the German club ESV Kaufbeuren, for whom he played between 2005 and 2007 ten games in the 2nd Bundesliga. This was followed by an insert for the Kloten Flyers in Switzerland before he was selected in the CHL Import Draft in 2007 by the Saint John Sea Dogs of the LHJMQ in third overall position. Then he opted for a move to North America and completed his rookie season in 32 games for the Canadians, thereby pass it 16 wins in a Gegentorschnitt of 3.77. In the playoffs, where his team were able to advance to the semifinals, it was used in two games. After the season, Mayer was ungedraftet, invited to the training camp of the Canadiens de Montréal and signed on 24 September 2008 a three-year entry-level contract with the Canadiens.

But the following season he played again for the Sea Dogs. He succeeded to double its use of time and he completed nearly 57 games. With 26 victories, he recorded a Gegentorschnitt of 3.21. However, he retired with the Sea Dogs in the playoffs in four games against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles from. He was then appointed to the AHL 2009/10 season in the squad of the Hamilton Bulldogs, the farm team of the Canadiens. But he only played one game with the Bulldogs, as he spent most of the season with the Cincinnati Cyclones in the ECHL and there came to 31 inserts. He reached his greatest success so far in the playoffs, when he and the Cyclones the Most stem the ECHL, the Kelly Cup won. Due to his performance in the playoffs, he was elected to the Kelly Cup Playoffs Most Valuable Player.

In the next season he was able to establish itself in the squad of the Hamilton Bulldogs and graduated as an AHL rookie 21 games. In the season 2011/12 he was in 39 games on the ice and presented with a catch rate of 90.9 %, a new personal best at. However, the Bulldogs missed a place in the playoffs again. For the game against the Tampa Bay Lightning 4 April 2012 Mayer was first appointed as a backup goaltender Peter Budaj in the preparation of the Canadiens.

Internationally

At the international level Mayer takes for Switzerland. For the first time he played in the U18 World Cup 2007 for the national team and led the Switzerland with a catch rate of 92.41 % to the quarter-finals. The fishing quota was also the best of the tournament. In the U20 World Cup 2008 he stood again for Switzerland on the ice, but could not prevent the descent of the team from the top division.
