Robert Otzen

Robert Otzen ( born May 9, 1872 in Giesensdorf; † October 3, 1934 in Hanover; Complete name: Robert Friedrich Ehlert Otzen ) was a German civil engineer and is considered the inventor of the word "highway".

Life

Robert Otzen was born the son of the Berlin architect John Otzen (1839-1911) and his wife Caroline nee Hausmann and had four sisters. Otzen studied engineering and later was president of the State Material Testing Office in Berlin - Dahlem. Since 19 November 1926 he was Chairman of the motorway project HaFraBa (Hamburg - Frankfurt am Main - Basel). Otzen was a professor of structural engineering and Eisenbau at the Technical University of Hannover and in the context of HaFraBa project responsible for the technical planning of the section of Hamburg, Göttingen.

In 1929, he should have used the term " highway " was coined in reference to the word " railroad ". Up to this point we usually spoke of " Only - highway ".
