Robert Rankin

Robert Fleming Rankin ( born July 23, 1949 in Parsons Green, London ) is a British author of humorous novels.

Life

In the late 1970s he began to write. His books are a mixture of science fiction, fantasy, occult, urban myths, running gags and colorful characters. Many of Robert Rankin's books are bestsellers in England. In Germany he is far less known, although a number of his books have been translated into German.

His stories usually play in our time and space, but are mixed with ancient myths and contemporary stories of aliens. For him there are not many taboos concerning his subjects, least of all that of religion. Most of the inspiration for his books he finds in pubs where the people he encounters, or the stories that these people tell him the seeds of his stories are. His humor is reminiscent of Terry Pratchett. Robert Rankin has managed so far to exercise in his life 39 different professions, ranging from concert pianists on Gogo Dancer, Tupperware seller, illustrator, Shakespearean actor to rock singer and garden gnome salesman. He claimed at least by itself; he admitted that he likes to lie about his activities.

In 1980, his career a low point, but after Terry Pratchett became famous and successful, Rankins books began again to sell.

He had studied graphic design at the Art School Ealing, is married and lives in Sussex.

The talent to tell stories, comes in their own words of his father, who served up his life and eventually even on his deathbed tall tales. The famous fictional character " Hugo Rune " is much inspired by Rankin's father, mixed with the person of probably the greatest English magician Aleister Crowley. More inspirations learns Robert Rankin but also by the many questions of his son, which he then has to consider an answer to.

On the afternoon of 18 December, he has finally married ( at least according to Sproutlore fan club ) in Las Vegas his girlfriend Rachel Hayward.

Occasionally he still occurs with his band "The rock gods" live.
