Robert Rossen

Robert Rossen, actually Robert Rosen (born 16 March 1908 in New York City; † February 18, 1966 in Hollywood) was an American screenwriter, film director and producer.

Life

Rossen, the son of Russian Jewish immigrants and grew up in poverty on the Lower East Side, gained his first experience as a director and writer in theater. From 1936 Rossen wrote screenplays for film production company Warner Bros. and soon became one of the highest paid writers in Hollywood. In 1937 horses in the American Communist Party, in the ten years he remained a member. In 1944, he left Warner Bros. His first major successes had horses after the Second World War, when he began to realize as a director for Columbia Pictures for his screenplays himself. One focus of his work was the film noir; along with his films Johnny O'Clock and chasing millions he wrote for Lewis Milestone The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, produced Joseph H. Lewis' alarm in the underworld and worked on the screenplay for anonymous Edgar G. Ulmer's no mercy.

1950 Rossen received an Oscar as producer for his film The man who wanted to rule ( All the King's Men) in the category of Best Film. The same film also brought him Golden Globe Awards in the categories of Best Director and Best Picture - Drama a.

1951 Rossen was in the review of the political ethos of filmmakers before the Committee on Un-American Activities ( " House Un - American Activities Committee ," short HUAC ) denounced as a communist. Then Columbia Pictures announced on cooperation. Rossen refused at its first subpoena issued by the HUAC first to reveal the names of former companions left.
