Robert Sorgenfrey

Robert Henry Sorgenfrey (* 1915, † January 6, 1995 ) was an American mathematician.

Robert Sorgenfrey started in 1933 to study mathematics and physics at the University of California, Los Angeles ( UCLA). He received his doctorate in 1941 at the University of Texas at Austin with a dissertation Concerning Triodic Continua at Robert Lee Moore. After further studies at the University of Texas at Austin, he returned in 1942 after Westwood back; his entire subsequent academic career was at UCLA, where he became Professor Emeritus in 1979.

By means of the eponymous Sorgenfrey straight and Sorgenfrey level he scored the topological result that products of normal spaces are generally not normal again.
