Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany

Robert Stewart (* 1340, † September 3, 1420 at Stirling Castle), was a son of Robert II, King of Scotland, and his first wife Elizabeth Mure of Rowallan. He was raised to the Earl of Fife, and finally April 28, 1398 to the 1st Duke of Albany in 1371.

Life

Between 1383 and 1407 Robert held the office of Great Chamberlain of Scotland in the reign of Robert III. Since 1406 he was regent for the present in English captivity of Jacob I. Multiple Duke led successful campaigns against England.

Since 1394 Robert was 2nd Earl of Buchan, and since 1403, 1st Earl of Atholl, lost the latter title in 1406 but again. In favor of his younger son John he gave up his title of Earl of Buchan. Buried is Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany in Dunfermline Abbey.

Progeny

Robert married his first wife, by papal dispensation, Margaret Graham ( † 1380 ), daughter of Alan Earl of Menteith. As a result of this marriage, Robert 1361 Earl of Menteith was. With her he had the following children:
