Robert Turner (composer)

Robert Turner ( born June 6, 1920 in Montreal, † January 26, 2012 in Winnipeg ) was a Canadian composer and music educator.

Turner studied at the McGill Conservatory of Music with Frank Hanson and Walter Hungerford piano and composition at Irvin Cooper. He continued his studies at McGill University in Douglas Clarke and Claude Champagne and 1947 from Colorado College with Roy Harris continued. Until 1948, he then studied at the Royal College of Music with Herbert Howells and Gordon Jacob and until 1950 at the George Peabody College of Teachers in Nashville / Tennessee, next to 1949 with Olivier Messiaen at Tanglewood. That year he also married the percussionist Sara Scott.

From 1952 to 1968 he worked as a music producer at the CBC Vancouver. He taught from 1955 to 1957 at the University of British Columbia, 1968-1969 at Acadia University, and thereafter until his retirement in 1985 at the University of Manitoba. Among his pupils were, among others, T. Patrick Carrabre, Jim Hiscott, Diana McIntosh and Glenn Buhr.
