Roberta Peters

Roberta Peters ( born May 4, 1930 in the Bronx, a borough of New York City; actually Roberta Peterman ). is an American opera, operetta, musical, song and concert singer in the vocal range soprano. She was one of the most famous coloratura sopranos of the 20th century.

Life and artistic work

She was the only child of a shoemaker and a Hutmodistin. At the age of 13, she began her musical training, not William Pierce Herman. In 1950, she debuted that have never previously stood on a stage, as Zerlina ( Don Giovanni) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and became famous overnight. Roberta Peters sang at all the great opera stages of the world. From the mid- 1950s, she appeared in several Italian opera houses as well as at the Vienna State Opera. Particular attention she attracted as Queen of the Night at the Salzburg Festival in 1963/64.

The repertoire of internationally acclaimed singer belonged among others the roles of Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Rosina in The Barber of Seville, the Nornia in Don Pasquale, the Nanette in Falstaff, the Sopie in Der Rosenkavalier, the Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, the Amore in Orpheus and Eurydice, Marzelina in Fidelio, Despina Cosi fan tutte, to name just a few of the many. Occasionally, they also sang Violetta in La Traviata and Mimi in La Bohème. In her later career she added her repertoire some operetta and musical roles to, such as The Merry Widow or The King and I.

The soprano was in demand worldwide recital and concert singer. An extensive discography and a high number of various TV and video recordings documenting the great musical spectrum of this exceptional artist.

Roberta Peters in 1951 was married to her colleagues at the Metropolitan Opera baritone Robert Merrill, for a few months. From their 1955 closed second marriage two sons were born.
