At the age of six years, Roberta Vinci began playing tennis. In 1997 she played in her home country for the first ITF tournaments. In 1998 she had her debut in Palermo on the WTA Tour and won in the first two ITF doubles titles.
In 2004, she reached with her former doubles partner Sandrine Testud the semifinals of the French Open. In 2005, she defeated qualifier as in the quarterfinals of the Eastbourne Russian Anastasia Myskina and reached the semi-finals.
A significant achievement was the first time winning the Fed Cup in 2006 for Italy.
