Roberto Ago

Roberto Ago ( born May 26, 1907 in Vigevano, † February 24, 1995 in Geneva ) was an Italian jurist. He was a professor of international law at various universities in his home country, from 1957 to 1978 as a member of the UN International Law Commission and from 1979 until his death as a judge at the International Court of Justice.

Life

Roberto Ago was born in 1907 in Vigevano and holds a degree in Law, from which he graduated at the University of Naples with a doctorate. In the years 1934/1935 he was professor of international law at the University of Catania and then moved to 1938 at the University of Genoa. From 1938 to 1956 he worked in the same capacity at the University of Milan and then to 1982 at the University of Rome. In the years 1936, 1939, 1956, 1971 and 1983, he taught at the Hague Academy of International Law, whose board of trustees he presided until his death almost two decades as chairman. In 1992 he participated in this function, contrary to the Félix Houphouët - Boigny Peace Prize, which was awarded the Academy for their work.

From 1957 to 1978 he was a member of the International Law Commission of the United Nations. With the beginning of 1979 he became a judge at the International Court of Justice ( ICJ) in The Hague, where he had previously been working as an ad hoc judge at an event. He worked until his death at the ICJ and died in 1995 in Geneva. His successor his compatriot Luigi Ferrari Bravo was, according to the traditions of the Court, elected, who worked until the regular end of Agos office in February 1997 at the ICJ.

Main focus of the academic activity of Roberto Ago and its activities in the International Law Commission was the field of international responsibility of States. He was from 1970 an honorary member of the American Society of International Law and was from 1952 the Institut de Droit international, whose held in Milan in 1993 66th session he led as president. The Universities of Paris, Geneva and Nice awarded him an honorary doctorate. Roberto Ago was widowed and father of three sons and two daughters.
