Roberto Di Matteo

Roberto Di Matteo (* 29 May 1970 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland ) is a retired Italian footballer and current coach.

Family, Youth years

His parents came from Abruzzo and emigrated to Switzerland, where his father worked as a crane operator. Roberto Di Matteo, who has a blind sister, went to school in Schaffhausen and was already in the school football team Speedy Gonzalez and then with the juniors of FC Schaffhausen as a great player and strategic thinker.

A naturalization in Switzerland is, though born in the Swiss Confederation and raised, so far taken place (May 2012). With his English life partner he has three children, all of whom were born in England.

Career as a player

Milton Keynes Dons

In August 2008, he joined his first coaching job in the third highest English league at the English club Milton Keynes Dons.

West Bromwich Albion

However, he left the club after a good season that nearly ended in promotion to the Football League Championship, towards Birmingham to West Bromwich Albion. He signed initially for one year and got into his first season with the second place in the Football League Championship behind Newcastle United in the Premier League right on. After a promising start to the season (among choice for coach of the month September 2010) he was there discharged after only one win in ten games on February 6, 2011.

Chelsea FC

For the season 2011/12 he became assistant to Andre Villas -Boas at Chelsea. After Villas -Boas ' release on March 4, 2012, he was initially until end of season coach of Chelsea FC. He won with his team the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League 2011 /12. After this successful spell as caretaker manager Di Matteo signed for Chelsea in June 2012 a new two-year contract.
