Roberto Eduardo Viola

Roberto Eduardo Viola ( born October 13, 1924 in Buenos Aires, † 30 September 1994 ) was a Argentine de facto President of 29 March to 11 December 1981 the executive organ of the process of the National Reorganization.

Due to its relatively short reign he did not put a lot of political points, essentially he led the policy of his predecessor Jorge Videla on. He saw himself as the preparer of a gradual transition to democracy, but was replaced by junta internal strife by Leopoldo Galtieri.

Viola appointed Lorenzo Sigaut of Finance; it became apparent that Sigaut ( and his protégé Domingo Cavallo ) were looking for ways to revise some of the measures of Videla Minister José Alfredo Martínez de Hoz. Sigaut managed an existing ' floating-exchange -rate mechanism ' from and devalued the peso. Argentina was preparing for a recession before after before a policy of easy money ( ' plata dulce ') inflation had tolerated or encouraged. This weakened Viola's position.

Viola was also a victim of intrigues and power games within the armed forces. After Emilio Massera had been removed as a fleet commander, he was looking for a private political environment, but he also made use of forced and unpaid services of political prisoners who were imprisoned by the regime in concentration camps.

After the transition to democracy in 1983 (see History of Argentina ) Viola was provided along with eight other members of the military governments in court and imprisoned after his sentence until 1992. 1992 Carlos Saul Menem pardoned President him by Presidential Decree.
