Roberto Maroni
Roberto Maroni ( born March 15, 1955 in Varese) is an Italian politician, President of the Northern Italian regional party Lega Nord, manager and lawyer. In the governments of Silvio Berlusconi, he was Italian Minister of the Interior (May 1994 January 1995) and Labor Minister (June 2001 - May 2006). From May 2008 to November 2011, he held the post of interior minister again in the fourth Berlusconi Cabinet. Since March 2013 he has been President of the Lombardy Region.
Political career
Maroni studied law at the University of Milan and graduated in 1979 with a thesis on the civil law from. After two years as a legal manager for several companies, he began his career as a lawyer.
In politics he first became involved in radical left-wing Democrats Proletaria before he met Umberto Bossi and Lega Lombarda 1990 joined, whose chairman he was in his home province of Varese. In addition, he was elected in 1990 to the City Council of Varese. In 1992, he won a seat in the Chamber of Deputies for the newly formed Northern League, whose faction he became Chairman. After Berlusconi's election victory in March 1994, Maroni was until early 1995 Interior and Deputy Prime Minister in his first cabinet. In September 1996 he was involved in Bossi's secessionist initiative to establish an autonomous republic of Padania, as a result, he was sentenced to 4 months and 20 days imprisonment for resisting state violence.
In the formation of the new center-right coalition Casa delle Libertà in advance of the 2001 parliamentary elections Maroni represented his party in drafting the joint election program. Through the re- election of the constellation, he received the post of Labour and Social Security Minister in Berlusconi's second and third government (2001-2006). After the change of power in 2006 Maroni was in the 15th legislative period again leader of the Lega Nord in the Chamber of Deputies and also worked with the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Election Committee of the Parliament.
On 8 May 2008, he was with the inauguration of the new Berlusconi government for the second time the Italian Minister of the Interior.
