Robin Harper

Robin Harper ( * August 4, 1940 in Thurso ), is a Scottish politician and member of the Scottish Green Party.

Harper attended St Marylebone Grammar School in London and the Elgin Academy in Elgin. He studied at the University of Aberdeen and Heriot- Watt University. Harper worked for many years as a teacher among other things, English, science and drama at various Scottish schools as well as in Kenya. Between 2000 and 2003 he held the position of Rector of the University of Edinburgh and was elected Rector of the University of Aberdeen in 2005.

Political career

For the first time Harper joined the British general election, 1992 to national elections. He applied for the direct mandate of the constituency of Edinburgh Central, but received just 1.6 % of the vote and failed to reach the British House of Commons clearly. In 1997, he applied for the direct mandate of the Edinburgh Pentlands constituency and received 0.5 % of votes. At the elections for the European Parliament in the constituency of North East Scotland in 1998, he ran well and was able to unite 1.7% of the votes.

Scottish Parliament

One of the first Scottish Parliament elections of 1999, Harper ran for a list of the mandate constituency Lothians. As a result of the election results, he drew the only Green politician in Scotland in the newly created Scottish Parliament. As of 1999, Harper acted as leader of the Scottish Green Party, first alone, then with Shiona Baird or Alison Johnstone. He was also a party spokesman on education, youth and sports. In the parliamentary elections in 2003 and 2007, Harper defended his mandate and had to retire at the end of the legislative term of the parliament from.
