Robin Lane Fox

Robin Lane Fox ( born 1946 ) is a British historian.

Robin Lane Fox attended Eton College, at 18 he did an internship in the rockery of the Munich Botanical Gardens, and afterwards studied at Magdalen College ( Oxford). He was 1977-2012 Fellow and Tutor since 1990 and Reader in Ancient History at New College and Exeter College, Oxford.

He has written numerous articles and monographs on ancient history topics. Among his best known books Alexander the Great (1973, revised German translation: Alexander the Great, Stuttgart 2004), Pagans and Christians (1986, reprinted 2006) and The Classical World: An Epic History from Homer to Hadrian ( 2005). In 2004, he was also an academic anthology to Xenophon's Anabasis out ( The Long March: Xenophon and the Ten Thousand ).

His comprehensive biography of Alexander is considered stylistically excellent, was overall very well received and won several awards. Lane Fox, however, was sharply criticized by Ernst Badian, the Alexander rated significantly more negative. He is one of the most important living British historian and has won several awards for his works. For his biography of Alexander in 1973 he was awarded the James Tait Black Award, the Duff Cooper Prize and the WH Heinemann Award. For his work, The Classical World, he was also awarded the 2006 Steven Runciman Award.

Lane Fox was a consultant for Oliver Stone during the filming of the movie Alexander.

He is an avid gardener in charge of the gardens of New College. Fox writes a column in the Financial Times newspaper on gardening and landscaping. In his spare time he devoted to fox hunting and riding. His daughter Martha Lane Fox is the co-founder of Lastminute.com.
