Robin Woods

The English Right Reverend Robert Wilmer Woods, KCMG, KCVO, who was always called Robin Woods, (* February 14, 1914, † 20 October 1997) was an Anglican Dean of Windsor and Bishop of Worcester and a member of the House of Lords.

Background and education

Woods was the youngest son of the Right Reverend Edward Sydney Woods ( † January 11, 1953 ), Bishop of Lichfield. His mother was Clemence Barclay († October 14, 1952 ) from the family of Barclay of Higham.

He enjoyed his education at Gresham 's School, Holt, and Trinity College, Cambridge.

Career

Woods in 1938 was ordained as a deacon in the Church of England and in 1939 as a priest. He was from 1937 to 1942 Assistant Secretary of the Student Christian Movement. His first klerische service was from 1938 to 1939 that of a curator of St. Edmund the King, Lombard Street, London, and subsequently he worked from 1939 to 1942 in Hoddesdon. During the Second World War he worked from 1942 to 1946 as a Chaplain to the Forces, and received in 1944 the military award Mentioned in Despatches.

After the war he became in 1946 vicar of South Wigston, Leicester. In 1951 he became Archdeacon of Singapore and vicar at St Andrew's Cathedral in Malaya. In 1958 he returned to England to become Archdeacon of Sheffield and Rector of Tankersley. In 1962 he was Dean of Windsor and Domestic Chaplain to Queen Elizabeth II. , He played an influential role in the upbringing of Prince Charles. Woods suggested that Charles should study at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he himself had studied. In Windsor, he also served as Register of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. In 1970 he became Bishop of Worcester and was Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, an honor which was his by personal selection by the Queen bestowed. From 1974 he was member of the House of Lords. He joined in 1981 to his retirement.

Family

Woods married in 1942 Henrietta ( " Etta " ) Marian Wilson ( † February 8, 2005 ) and had with her two sons and three daughters. Through marriage, he was one of the wealthiest clergymen of the Church of England.
