Robinson Barracks

The Robinson Barracks is a military base of the U.S. armed forces on the Burgholzhof in the north of Stuttgart. They are used, in contrast to the other two Stuttgarter U.S. military bases Patch Barracks and Kelley Barracks, now only as a pure residential area.

The name Robinson Barracks goes back to James E. Robinson, Jr. (1918-1945), an officer of the United States Army, who was posthumously honored for his achievements in the Second World War with the Medal of Honor.

History

The military use of the area began in 1927 with the construction of a parade ground for the infantry of the army. In 1934 the adjoining farm Burgholzhof, who gave his name to the district today Burgholzhof, demolished and the Flanders barracks. After the Second World War, the U.S. military used the barracks only as a camp for displaced persons, from 1948, the Robinson Barracks were created there.

In 1993, the United States gave the southern part of the land on which the actual barracks was located with parade ground, on which allowed an urban development of the area. From 1996 to 2006, the new district Burgholzhof there arose with around 3000 inhabitants.

The also used by the Americans Grenadierkaserne, which was located immediately north of the Robinson Barracks in Stuttgart- red, was torn down on a building, which is the site of the examination office of the Federation in Stuttgart at the present time in 2000.

Facilities

In addition to a primary school, a library and several sports fields there are in the grounds, inter alia, also a furniture store, a liquor store, a hairdresser and a video library.

Since 2013 AFN Stuttgart sends back of a newly built studio complex of the radio program for U.S. soldiers. Previously to 1993 were the Robinson Barracks location of the radio station.

The Robinson Barracks include a 40 -meter-high radio tower in steel truss design, which can be seen in many parts of Stuttgart.
