Rocca Imperiale

Rocca Imperiale is an Italian town in the province of Cosenza in Calabria with 3297 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Rocca Imperiale is located about 124 km north of Cosenza. The municipality belongs to the region of Cosenza, which is bordered to the north by the region of Basilicata. The neighboring municipalities are Canna, Montegiordano and Nova Siri (MT ).

Attractions

In Rocca Imperiale ( the historical part ) of the village are the ruins of a castle dating from the 13th century that has been built by the Hohenstaufen Emperor Frederick II. This castle was expanded several times and rebuilt in the period from the 15th to the 17th century. For several years, efforts are underway to carry out with the help of EU funding restoration work.

Rocca Imperiale Marina is closer to the beach ( 200-300 meters from the sea, the historical part 4 km), on the coast of the Ionian Sea. The beach is about 7 km long. Mainly along the Lungo Mare to find stone / pebble beaches, which in between sand beaches ( direction campsite) are interrupted. Like virtually every village, has also Rocca Imperiale Marina along with a piazza in the center of a ' Lungo Mare ', a promenade. In the summer there are various concerts in Rocca Imperiale or Rocca Imperiale Marina.

Paese dei limoni ... (country / town of lemons). Even today, there are numerous lemon trees / plantations at this beautiful place. Where the new Rocca Imperiale with the addition Marina has emerged ( for sea ), once grew much of this fruit. One can follow the signposted path of lemons. Not only lemons grow excellent in this region. Orange and mandarin trees, olive trees, vegetables and vines, from which especially in the area ( Nova Siri ) light and rich fruit wines are produced. The variety of products and proximity to the sea are reflected in the rich, varied, light cuisine of the region.

In Rocca Imperiale Marina is also the ' magazzino ', which was built in the 18th century (1731 ), commissioned by Duke Fabio Crivelli. It served not only as a store but also as a market, but today is not freely accessible. It can be seen ( entablature ) the art of craft and on the partially collapsed, complex roof structure. In its immediate vicinity is an impressive square watchtower from the 16th century. The two buildings demonstrate the importance of Rocca Imperiale in trade and as a strategic location.
