History

The earliest settlement time is difficult to date. The footprints found near the village ( Ciampete del Diavolo ) of Homo heidelbergensis are evidence of a very early settlement. The volcano was at this time probably still active.

From the 5th or 4th century BC settled here the Ausonians or Ausonen. A solid village seems to have existed from the 3rd century AD. However, the present settlement is not older than the 10th century.
