Roccaverano

Roccaverano ( in Piedmontese Rocavran ) is a municipality with 439 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the Italian province of Asti (AT ), Region Piedmont.

Geography

Roccaverano lies in the Langa Astigiana, a promontory that extends between the rivers BORMIDA di MILLESIMO and BORMIDA di Spigno before its confluence to BORMIDA. The place is the highest in the province of Asti.

Neighboring municipalities are Bubbio Cessole, Denice, Loazzolo, Mombaldone, Monastero Bormida, Olmo Gentile, San Giorgio Scarampi, Serole, Spigno Monferrato and Vesime.

History

Roccaverano was first mentioned as Ruspaverano when Otto I the place Aleramo of Monferrato handed. However, the place is safe inhabited since ancient times. The name itself suffers ago by Rocha Uverani, that is a castle ( Rocca ) above the river Ovrano.

The descendants Aleramos, the family del Carrettos owned the place from 1209 as a fief of Asti.
