Rochecorbon

Rochecorbon (formerly La roche corbon ) is a commune with 3272 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Indre- et- Loire in the Centre region; it belongs to Arrondissement Tours and Vouvray to the canton.

History

Rochecorbon, located on the Loire, in pre-Christian period was a Gallic settlement. The natural caves on the river were inhabited already in the Aurignacian.

The Romans called the place Vodanum; its present name probably comes from Corbon des Roches, a nobleman who built a castle dominating the Loire. From his son comes of built around 1095 square ten meters high, called Lanterne tower. Its history is also closely linked to the abbeys of Saint -Martin de Tours and Marmoutier linked, both had numerous goods in the region.

In 1808 the neighboring town of Saint -Georges- sur -Loire was combined with Rochecorbon.

Personalities

1863, the composer Charles Bordes was born in Rochecorbon. Jean Cocteau mentions in his Journal d'un film- that filming has begun to La Belle et la Bête ( Beauty and the Beast ) on 26 August 1946 in Rochecorbon.
