Rochester Hills is a city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The 85.3 km ² large city had 68,825 inhabitants in 2000. The city is an affluent suburb on the northern outskirts of metro Detroit.

Geography

Rochester Hills is located about 40 km north of Detroit. Nearby towns include Rochester in the Northeast, the South Troy and Auburn Hills in the west.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 85.3 km ², of which 0.2 km ² water surfaces. The 203 km long River Rouge rises in Rochester Hills. It flows into the Detroit River. In the municipality are still remains of the only partially completed Clinton - Kalamazoo Canal to see.

History

1835, the town was founded as Avon Township. Rochester was founded in 1869 within the Township as a Village. In 1966, the residents of Rochester finally spoke out in favor of managing their town as a city. Thus they had no longer pay property taxes to the Township.

1967 was finally submitted in Avon Township, a petition to get city rights. Three different founding documents were rejected by voters in the years 1969, 1970 and 1971. Rochester then tried to acquire the Township, which was unanimously rejected by the Michigan Boundary Commission. Subsequently, a petition was filed in 1972, the Avon Township wanted to merge with Rochester. This was rejected in April 1974 in Avon Township, with 350 votes, while it was adopted in Rochester with 4 votes difference.

In May 1984, the voters of Avon Township approved finally a city certificate of incorporation. On 20 November 1984 the Township became the city of Rochester Hills. However, there were still discussions about a merger with Rochester and 1987 these plans were clearly rejected by the voters in both cities.

Economy

The global automotive supplier DURA Automotive Systems is headquartered in Rochester Hills. Furthermore, the headquarters of Chrysler, Ford and General Motors are all within 20 minutes driving time from Rochester Hills.

Traffic

The town has links to the Michigan State Route 59 and Interstate 75, about which one Detroit reached in 30 minutes and the Detroit Metro Airport in 45 minutes.

Education

Rochester Hills is home to the Rochester colleges and the campus of Oakland University is located between Rochester Hills and Auburn Hills, although the official seat is located in the neighboring city of Rochester. The public school districts in the city Avondale School District and Rochester Community Schools.

Demographic data

According to the United States Census 2000, there were 68 825 inhabitants in 26,315 households and 18,973 families. The population was composed of 88.75 % White, 6.76 % Asian, and 2.42% Black. Hispanics or Latinos represented 2.29% of the population. The per capita income was 35,070 U.S. dollars and 3.4% of the population lived below the poverty line.
