Rock Firefinch

The Felsenamarant ( Lagonosticta sanguinodorsalis ) is an African species of the family of finches. We distinguish between no subspecies described for this species in 1998. The Felsenamarant similar to Reichenow Amaranth, but it is much redder than this on the back.

Description

The Felsenamarant reaches a body length of ten to eleven centimeters. The male has a gray head and neck top. The back and wing coverts are red-brown, the rump and upper tail-coverts are red. The cheeks, throat, chest and abdomen, the plumage is deep red. The upper edges and the sides of the chest have white, punctate spots. The coverts are black. The females are similar to males, but are overall somewhat paler and the white dots on the body side have gray spots on.

Circulation area and way of life

The Felsenamarant has so far been observed only in northern Nigeria on the Jos Plateau. However, it is believed that it occurs also in northern Cameroon. Its habitat is rocky landscapes with thickets, forests or grasslands. He lives alone, in pairs and in small groups. Its food consists of small grass seeds. The reproductive behavior is not yet fully investigated. Demonstrated is simply that the Jos Atlas widow ( Vidua maryae ) is a brood parasite of Felsenamarant.
