Rockcastle County, Kentucky
Rockcastle County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Mount Vernon. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located in east-central Kentucky, is located in the south about 80 km from the state of Tennessee and has an area of 824 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Garrard County, Madison County, Jackson County, Laurel County, Pulaski County and Lincoln County.
History
Rockcastle County was formed on January 8, 1810 from parts of Knox County, Lincoln County, Madison County and Pulaski County. It was named for the Rockcastle River.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Rockcastle County 16,582 people in 6,544 households and 4,764 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.81 percent White, 0.14 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.13 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.04 percent from other races groups; 0.63 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.62 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,544 households out of which 33.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.9 percent were married couples living together, 11.4 percent were single mothers, 27.2 percent were non-families, 24.4 percent of all households and 10.7 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.95 persons.
Based on the county the population was spread from 24.4 percent population under 18 years, 8.8 percent between 18 and 24 years, 30.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.2 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.9 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 94.6 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 23,475, and the median income for a family was $ 30,278. Males have a median income of $ 26,770, women $ 18,388. The per capita income was $ 12,337. 19.1 percent of families and 23.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 28.3 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 21.6 percent of those 65 years.
