Rocourt is a municipality in the district of Porrentruy in the canton of Jura in Switzerland.

Geography

Rocourt is located on 508 m above sea level. M., 9 km west-southwest of the district municipal seat Porrentruy (air line). The farming village extends in a 500 m wide Talniederung at the northern foot of the Jura range Lomont, in the southwest of Ajoie ( German Elsgau ).

The area of ​​4.5 km ² large municipality territory, which includes the central portion of the dry valley of Rocourt. In the north, the area extends to the Tabular Jura plateau of the western Ajoie (up to 570 m above sea level. M. ). To the south the municipal area extends up to the northern slope of the Lomont below Roche- d'Or, where she worked with 750 m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Rocourt. The eastern boundary is the valley Fond de Vaux. The area is karstified and shows no surface watercourses. From the municipality surface 1997 4 % came from settlements, 37 % of forest and woody plants and 59% to agriculture.

To Rocourt include the farm cluster Coinat (540 m above sea level. M. ) south of the village as well as several individual farms. Neighboring communities of Rocourt are Grand Fontaine, Fahy and Haute- Ajoie.

Population

With 159 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Rocourt one of the small communities of the Canton of Jura. Of the 91.6 % inhabitants are French-speaking and German-speaking 7.8 % (as of 2000). The population of Rocourt amounted in 1850 to 272 residents in 1900 to 232 inhabitants. During the 20th century, a declining trend was recorded in total.

Economy

Rocourt is a dominantly agricultural village thanks to the fertile soils of the area. The site offers not only the local small businesses hardly jobs outside the primary sector. Many workers are therefore commuters and work mainly in the region Porrentruy.

Traffic

The municipality is situated on the main road of Porrentruy over the border crossing of Damvant to Pont -de- Roide in France. By Postbus course, which runs on the track of Porrentruy to Damvant, Rocourt is connected to public transport. In addition to this regular bus Rocourt is developed with a flexible Rufbussystem (Public Car), which is available everywhere in the Ajoie since 1997.

History

His first mentioned in 1148 as the village Rocort. The name probably derives from the Germanic personal name Radulf. The village belonged to the lords of Rocourt whose castle no longer exists today. When these became extinct, Rocourt fell to the Prince-Bishopric of Basel. From the 16th to the 18th century the village belonged to Meier office Chevenez. On the night of 4th to June 5, 1785, many houses fell victim to a conflagration. Between 1793 and 1815 Rocourt belonged to France and was initially part of the département du Mont- Terrible, associated from 1800 with the Department of Haut -Rhin. By the decision of the Congress of Vienna, the place came in 1815 to the canton of Bern and on 1 January 1979 at the newly founded Canton Jura.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint -François -Xavier was built in 1857 on the foundations of an earlier building. Before the construction of this church belonged to the parish Rocourt Grand Fontaine. In the center are still numerous characteristic farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries.
