Rocroi

Rocroi (also Rocroy ) is a commune with 2422 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Ardennes department in the Champagne- Ardenne region. It belongs to the district of Charleville -Mézières, the Local Government Association, founded in 2003 Val d' Ardenne et plateau and is the capital ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of Rocroi.

Geography

History

To be able to resist the power of Charles V., the French King Henry II Rocroi was provided with a fortress expansion. As today the commune was then located at the border, at that time the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation.

The Battle of Rocroi was before the walls south of the city in 1643 instead and was fought between the French and the Spaniards during the Thirty Years' War.
