Rodney Jones (guitarist)

Rodney Bruce Jones ( born August 30, 1956 in New Haven (Connecticut) ) is an American guitarist ( bassist ) of modern jazz.

Life and work

Jones is the son of a clergyman; his uncle Eugene Wayman Jones has emerged as a pianist and choir director. Jones grew up in Nashville and New York City and had as a child cello and piano lessons. He learned guitar from the age of seven as a self-taught and worked with already thirteen years of recordings of folk music. Then he took private lessons with guitarist Bruce Johnson and studied at City College improvisation at John Lewis; He also played in his ensemble. In 1974, he appeared in commercials with Jaki Byard Five before it from 1975 to 1979 member of the groups of Chico Hamilton and Dizzy Gillespie; with the latter he was on tour. He also played one of her own albums. In the early 1980s, he was first studio musicians appeared as musical director forth with Ruth Brown, and played in the television show of Bill Cosby. From 1983 he worked as a guitarist and arranger for Lena Horne.

He also played with Kenny Kirkland, Ronnie Burrage, Tommy Flanagan, Hank Jones, Hilton Ruiz, Maceo Parker, Kenny Burrell, Stan Getz and Jimmy Smith. With Jimmy McGriff he joined in 1993 at the Berlin Jazz Festival.

Since 1988, Jones has been a lecturer at the Manhattan School of Music, and was also involved in film music productions.
