Rodrigo Zamorano

Zamerano Rodrigo, Rodrigo Camorano (* 1542 in Medina de Rioseco, † 1623 in Seville) was a Spanish mathematician, navigator and cosmography ( cartographer ) in the service of the Spanish king Philip II.

He had a university education and taught intermittently at the Universities of Valladolid and Salamanca.

Zamerano was from 1575 professor of cosmography and mathematics ( teacher of navigation ) on the 1503 under Portuguese model founded Casa de Contratación (La Casa y Audienca de Indias ) for the management of trade with the Spanish colonies in Seville, where he also worked as cosmography and mathematician was busy. In 1576 he published in Seville the first Spanish ( Castilian ) translation of the Elements of Euclid, but only the first six books. He translated from the Greek, closely followed the text without their own additions, or omissions and was the other contemporary Renaissance translations into modern languages ​​, which were often quite freely, far superior. The book was written as a textbook for the navigation school in Seville.
