Roger de Damas

Comte Joseph Élisabeth Roger de Damas D' Antigny (* 1765, † September 18, 1823 ) was a French count, general and brother of Joseph -François -Louis -Charles de Damas.

Life

He entered his twelfth year in the regiment of the king, then escaped, entered Russian service in 1787, and made war against the Turks. A bolder and happier attack on the Turkish flagship and his assault on Otshakoff won him the favor of the Empress Catherine II of Russia, who appointed him chief of their army. Towards the end of 1789 he returned to Paris, but went after the outbreak of the revolution in Vienna, received in Jassy the command of a Russian regiment and played a big part in the capture of Ismail.

In September 1792, he accompanied the Count Charles of Artois, the future Charles X, in the Champagne region. After the pitiful end of this campaign, he went to Saint Petersburg and to England and then in command of the Army of the Rhine Prince Condé, a legion in the campaigns of 1796 and 1797.

When the army went into Russian Condés pay, he went to Italy, in Naples received the command of a division under Karl Mack's command, and his division was the only one in this shameful campaign, who guarded her military honor. Also in 1805, he distinguished himself as the commander of the Neapolitan troops. In 1814 he was employed in all its previous dignities and was appointed lieutenant general and commander of Lyon. After fruitless efforts at Napoleon's return from Elba get the troops into obedient, he followed Louis XVIII. to Belgium.

After the second restoration he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, but set back again to his post as governor of Lyon by the king. He died on 18 September 1823.
