Roger Michell

Roger Michell ( born June 5, 1956 in Pretoria) is a South African director.

Michell grew up in Syria and Czechoslovakia. He made his debut with the short television series Downtown Lagos (1992) and The Buddha of Suburbia (1993); for The Buddha of Suburbia, he was nominated for the BAFTA TV Award. For the film Jane Austen's Seduction (1995 ) he won the BAFTA TV Award. For Frontline - Caught in the Middle (1998) he won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the International Film Festival of Locarno and was nominated for the Golden Leopard. He also won the Prize of the International Film Festival Emden and was nominated the Dinard British Film Festival for the Golden Hitchcock.

Michell directed the film Notting Hill ( 1999) with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, for which he was nominated for the British Academy Film Award, and for the Norwegian Amanda Award. He won the Empire Award. The movie lane change ( 2002), he turned to Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson. For the film The Mother - The Mother, he was nominated for a price of Makati Cinemanila International Film Festival as well as for the Golden Cup of the Shanghai International Film Festival. For the movie obsessive love - Enduring Love (2004) he was nominated for the British Independent Film Award, the Directors Guild of Great Britain Award, an Empire Award and a European Film Award.

Michell was married until 2002 with the actress Kate Buffery. He has two children.
