Roger Norrington

Sir Roger Norrington, CBE ( born March 16, 1934 in Oxford ) is a British conductor.

Life

Roger Norrington learned violin as a child and singing. A 1946 concert in England attention: a guest performance by the Berlin Philharmonic under Wilhelm Furtwängler was the basis of his decision to become a conductor.

Norrington studied at Westminster School and history at the University of Cambridge English literature during this time he had already worked as a choir director of amateur ensembles. He studied music at the Royal College of Music. He founded several ensembles, the feel of historical performance practice bound, so the Schütz Choir of London and the London Classical Players. With the latter orchestra, he was one of the first to let play works from the 19th century on old instruments, old line-up and installation, without the then uncommon, acquired only in the 20s of the 20th century " coffee house vibrato ". Special attention was given to a recording of the complete symphonies and piano concertos of Beethoven.

1997 Norrington was knighted as a Knight Bachelor and took over the management of the Camerata Salzburg, from 1998 he was Chief Conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra. With "his" Radio Symphony Norrington has developed a very individual sound, which is often dubbed by the press as the Stuttgart Sound. This refers to the synthesis of historically -informed music-making by the means of a modern and flexible radio sound body. Norrington is a globally sought-after conductor. 13 September 2008 Norrington conducted in London for the first time the Last Night of the Proms.

End of July 2011 was Norrington his post at the RSO Stuttgart. Since the season 2011/12 Roger Norrington has worked as Principal Conductor of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra.
