Origin

Matsumura no Rohai

The Matsumura no Rohai or only Rohai originally comes from the Baihequan Quanfa, but acts not as dynamic as other kata of Baihequan, eg Chinto. In Okinawa it was taught both in the Tomari-te and Shuri-te in and later in Matsumura Shorin- ryū.

Itosu no Rohai

Rohai shodan

Itosu, a student of Matsumura, developed on the basis of Rohai another kata names Rohai shodan (Japanese鹭 牌 初段, dt award of the heron, the lowest level ). This kata is similar to the beginning of the strong Rohai Matsumura, but the techniques are towards the center more often executed to the side. In addition, the techniques used are the Rohai shodan completely different and the kata is shorter, but from a high level of difficulty.

Rohai nidan

Unlike all other Kata of Rohai series Rohai contains nidan (Japanese鹭 牌 二段, dt award of the heron, the second stage ) no resemblance to their original form. One feature distinguishing these is that the Sagi ashi dachi ( the Reiherfußstellung ), which is crucial for its name, does not occur. The Kata is significantly longer than Rohai Shodan and Sandan and some techniques, such as Shuto uke in kosa dachi, four directions are carried out in a total of all. This shows in the Bunkai a mirror image similar concept and in fact is the basis of this kata Meikyo what light mirror means.

Rohai sandan

Just as in the Rohai nidan also Rohai shows sandan (Japanese鹭 牌 三 段, dt award of the heron, the third stage ) no typical techniques of Matsumura no Rohai, but the beginning is similar dynamic as those of the kata. Its duration is shorter than that of its predecessor, however, significantly longer than that of Rohai shodan. The techniques of Rohai sandan very similar to those of Kushanku why one can speculate that kata was actually developed first.
