Rohan Abeyaratne

Rohan Abeyaratne ( born October 7, 1952 in Sri Lanka ) is an American engineer scientist for hydrodynamics and aerodynamics. He is Professor of Applied Mechanics ( Quentin Berg Professor ) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

He is the son of a high government official in Sri Lanka (LB Abeyaratne ), attended the Royal College in Colombo and studied at the University of Ceylon with a bachelor 's degree in 1975, where he received the EOE Pereira Gold Medal of the University. He then continued his studies at Caltech on to the master's degree in 1976 and his doctorate in 1979. He is a professor at MIT. 2001 to 2008 he headed the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and from 2009 he was Director of the SMART Centre, Singapore -MIT Alliance for Research and Technology, a collaboration of MIT with universities in Singapore.

He dealt with continuum mechanics, especially non-equilibrium behavior of solids, instability and stress- induced phase transformations. As an educator, he has been awarded several times ( Den Hartog Distinguished Educator Award in 1995, MacVicar Fellow of the MIT 2000). In 2010 he received the Daniel C. printer Medal. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Academy of Mechanics, which he was president from 2007 to 2008.
