Sanctuary

In the comparatively little chopped, to the west marked by considerable differences in altitude area, there are several nature reserves: Rohrhardsberg - Upper Elz and the two neighboring areas west Yacher tines and Kostgefäll. The total area is designated as a Natura 2000 site. On the plateau ridge between the Sweden ski jump on the Rohrhardsberg and the Brend are habitats of capercaillie and hazel grouse and other, sometimes very rare animal and plant species. For this reason, it was agreed in the model project Rohrhardsberg to use only a narrow axis between Brend and Sweden ski jump for sport and tourist purposes and largely to leave large areas of undisturbed. Some areas should continue to be used extensively pasture farming, as a purely mechanical holding open of the few remaining rough grazing here would be useful neither economic nor ecological reasons. In this project successfully cooperate conservation agencies, forestry, municipalities and various user groups.

In Rohrhardsberg area in 2007 one of the first Natura 2000 management plans of the Regional Council of Freiburg has been completed; in the area since 2006, further funding from the EU LIFE program flow to secure the network Natura 2000. In cooperation with local farmers a further opening of verbrachenden or afforested Weidfeldern is here, among others, performed.
