Rokiškis

Listen Rokiškis? / I ( Rokischken German, Polish Rakiszki ) is a town of about 17,000 inhabitants and seat of the Rajongemeinde in northeastern Lithuania, not far from the border with Latvia. It belongs to the district of Panevezys.

History

The Good Rokiškis was first in 1499, mentioned in a letter from Alexander, Grand Duke of Lithuania. His successor, Sigismund the Old gave away the castle in 1523 to the royal family Kroszinski, who ruled the area for over 200 years. Then the rule was transferred to the Baltic German noble family originally Tyzenhaus ( Polonised form of Tiesenhausens ) by marriage. In their time buildings were erected, which characterize the city today, especially the manhole designed by Gustav and from 1868 to 1883 built St. Matthew Church, which is the most important neo-Gothic building in Lithuania.

When the Wehrmacht on 21 June 1941, the Soviet Union fell, Lithuania was quickly overrun by the German troops. Economy

Important industries are the manufacturers of agricultural machinery Rokiskio mašinų gamykla and the dairy group Rokiskio Suris.

The Rajongemeinde ( Rokiskio rajono savivaldybė ) comprises the three cities Rokiškis Obeliai ( 1371 inhabitants) and Pandėlys (1024 inhabitants), the 9 town ( miesteliai ) Čedasai, Duokiškis, Juodupė ( 2023 inhabitants), Jūžintai, Kamajai, Panemunėlis, Panemunis, Salo ir Suvainiškis, and 689 villages, including Kavoliškis with 1428 inhabitants.
