Rokuharamitsu-ji

The Rokuharamitsu -ji (Japanese六 波罗蜜 寺) is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture in Japan. At the temple German name means " Temple of the Six Perfections ". The temple is associated with the faith Shingon shū Chizan -ha.

Main image of the temple is a statue of Kannon eleven. The Rokuharamitsu -ji Temple is the 17th of Saigoku - pilgrimage (西 国 三十 三 箇 所, Saigoku sanjūsankasho ).

Overview

During a plague outbreak in the year 951 of the Buddhist priest Kuya said to have carved the main image of an eleven- Kannon.

To accommodate this figure was established by him in 963 near the cemetery Toribeno the Rokuharamitsu -ji under the name Saiko -ji. 977, the temple was a branch temple of Enryaku -ji and received its present name. During the 12th century, developed around the Rokuharamitsu -ji an extensive district where mainly members of the Taira clan lived. In the Genpei War of the temple was therefore completely burned down and rebuilt until 1363. In the struggles of the early Meiji period, the temple was badly damaged and renovated in 1969 from the ground up.

A number of important cultural property of Japan are in the possession of the Rokuharamitsu -ji. Some of these are shown in a small museum on the temple grounds. Among these are:

  • Wooden seated sculpture of the sculptor Unkei from the Kamakura period,
  • Wooden seated sculpture of the sculptor Tankei from the Kamakura period,
  • Wooden sculptures of the four Heavenly Kings ( Shitenno ) from the Heian period,
  • Wooden sculpture of a Bhaisajyaguru from the Heian period,
  • Wooden standing sculpture of Ksitigarbha from the Heian period,
  • Wooden seated sculpture of Kūkai from the Kamakura period,
  • Wooden seated statue of Kuya from the Kamakura period,
  • Sculpture of Yama from the Kamakura period,
  • Sculpture of Kisshōten ( cf. Lakshmi ) from the Kamakura period.

Other works of art, such as the seated figure of a priest, of which it is, the agency Taira no Kiyomori is, are currently in the Tokyo National Museum.
