Roland Gräf

Roland Graef ( born October 13, 1934 in Meuselbach ) is a German film director, screenwriter and cinematographer who was one of the most important directors of the DEFA.

Life

He completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk, acquired afterwards at the Workers' and Peasants Faculty in Jena for university and studied from 1954 to 1959 at the German Film Academy in Babelsberg camera.

From 1960 he worked at the DEFA Studio for Feature Films, he coined in the mid- sixties mainly the camera style of poetic realism with (born in 45), which was an important means of expression of their reality exploring for a group of young directors.

In 1970, he was with My dear Robinson, a time portrait of young people, his directorial debut. With his films about the GDR reality he reached great attention at home and abroad. In 1978 he was awarded at the International Film Festival Karlovy Vary, the grand prize for his film The Vanishing, the a taboo topic in the German Democratic Republic, the Republic of escape, grappled. In the 1980s, he turned in three films ( Fariaho, house on the river, Fallada Last Chapter ) historical subjects to, but for which the tension between adaptation and resistance, the late GDR coined increasingly clear were the real narrative reason.

From 1985 until the privatization of the studio and the dismissal of the artistic staff Roland Graef was Chairman of the Artistic Council. In 1991 he started with The Tango Player for the third time ( house on the river in 1986, Fallada - the final chapter 1988) in the Berlinale Competition in part, for this film, he received in the same year the German Film Award. The track of the Amber Room in 1992 was his last movie cinema, three rotating mature books he could not then realize.

In 1997 he built at the HFF Konrad Wolf in Babelsberg the Department of Media Specific Acting on which he directed until 2001. Since its founding in 1998, Roland Graef Vice Chairman of the Foundation Board of the DEFA Foundation was (until 2005).

Roland Graef lives in Babelsberg and in flaming. In October 2009, the Potsdam Film Museum showed a selection of his photographic works titled Flaming images.
