Roland Oliver

Roland Anthony Oliver ( born March 30, 1923 in Srinagar, Kashmir, India Empire, † February 9, 2014 ) was a British historian and was Professor of African History, the major influence on the development of African Studies in the United Kingdom.

Life

Oliver studied from 1941 to 1948 at King 's College, Cambridge at the University of Cambridge. His degree of Dr. phil. He graduated from the University of London, where he worked in the years until his retirement in 1986, most recently as Professor of African History, taught at the School of Oriental and African Studies ( SOAS ). His teaching influenced the future scientists of African Studies worldwide.

Oliver traveled several times to Africa to research travel and visited the continent almost every year. Together with John Donnelly Fage he is a founding editor of the Journal of African History and editor of the eight-volume Cambridge History of Africa, which was launched in 1975 to 1986. At the same time appeared his Oxford History of East Africa.

As a visiting professor, he worked at the former University of Brussels before their division by language barriers, at Northwestern University in Illinois in the United States and at Harvard University in New Haven, Connecticut, USA.
