Roland Wetzig

Roland Wetzig ( born July 24, 1959 in Oschatz ) is a former German Bobsportler.

Beginnings as an athlete

Roland Wetzig started as his future teammate Bogdan Musiol as Athlete at SC DHfK Leipzig. After he was Spartakiadesieger 1977 and 1978 DDR junior champion, he reached his personal best in the discus with 54.04 meters in the following year. Despite his body measurements (1.86 m/85 kg ), he was not considered GDR sports leadership as strong enough to penetrate to the top. Then he switched to bobsledding.

Medals under three pilots

In 1980, he was already sitting with coxswain Horst Schönau im Bob DDR II, who at the XIII. Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid won the bronze medal. In the same year he was able to confirm this success at the World Championships as third. The following year he moved to the four-man event by Bernhard Lehmann, with whom he immediately won bronze at the European Championships in 1982 and was runner-up. 1983 he moved again to Wolfgang Hoppe. With the successful bobsleigh pilot of all time, he was at the XIV Olympic Games Sarajevo 1984 Olympic champion in four and a year later the World Cup runner-up. At the end of his career he won in 1987 in Hoppe- Bob the European Championship.

For his Olympic victory in 1984, he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold.
